The Race to Qualify for next season's Champions Hockey League probably could get much more exciting. We're going into the final stages of the regular season in four founding leagues, where each has at least two places still to be decided!
It's a showdown on Monday night in Switzerland's National League with two places in next season's CHL left - and just the final regular season Game Day to decide them. Of the three teams all with mathematical chances of qualifying, none have ever played in the CHL before! EHC Biel-Bienne and Lausanne HC are the front-runners in third and fourth currently - but they can both be leapfrogged by Langnau Tigers a point behind. With Langnau hosting Lausanne tonight, one of the qualifiers is certain to be decided in that game.
The final two rounds in the Czech Extraliga take place during this week. Liberec were confirmed as a qualifiers on Sunday night as they can now finish no lower than third - however both Třinec and Pilsen are still in there fighting for the regular season crown, too. Those sides currently sit in the best places to get the remaining CHL spots available from the regular season, but Mountfield HK are still chasing.
Up in the Nordic countries, four Game Days this week in the Liiga should mean we're able to confirm another two qualifiers in Finland. TPS Turku & Tappara Tampere sit in positions second and third respectively, and with a small gap over the chasing teams are well-placed to take the final two CHL places directly from the regular season. We'll then await the playoffs to decide the national champions.
In Sweden, there are five Game Days left to play for everyone- 2015 CHL Champions Luleå are a win away from confirming their place back in the CHL next season, while Färjestad are close but would also need Djurgården to drop points to do it with a win in their next game.
Germany's regular season is now over, which means the playoff champions are the only team left to be determined. In the event that the playoff finals are won by either Adler Mannheim or Red Bull Munich, Augsburg Panthers will qualify for the CHL as the third-placed team from the regular season. There is a similar principle in Austria, where although the Pick Round is not quite over we now know that Vienna have qualified form this stage. Therefore, if the EBEL playoff finals see Graz or Vienna win the title, the runner-up in the Pick Round will make the CHL. If that happens to be one of Graz and Vienna again, we then revert to the losing playoff finalists.
