Miro Karjalainen (#38) of HPK Hämeenlinna, time 35:11, was involved in an incident deemed as Fighting (IIHF Rule 141). The video evidence has determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 1B: ‘Careless’ – insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error.
According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the CHL Disciplinary Board, player Miro Karjalainen (#38) of HPK Hämeenlinna will receive supplementary discipline under CHL Casebook Fighting Rule 141(4) – A player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment (Aggressor) on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant.
After review of the video evidence, it has been determined that the incident involving Miro Karjalainen (#38) is a one-man fight in accordance with the CHL Casebook.
After making a legal body check, Miro Karjalainen (#38) pinned the opposing player against the boards. For no apparent reason, Miro Karjalainen (#38) dropped his gloves and began throwing punches.
The reason for supplementary discipline is Miro Karjalainen (#38) threw numerous punches at the head area of the unwilling opposing player. In addition, the opposing player is on the ice in a defenseless position and unable to defend himself. This was a cause for the linesman to enter altercation for the protection of the opposing player. Miro Karjalainen (#38), even after the lineman entered altercation, continued to throw punches. This is not deemed a fight, but rather a player taking advantage of an opposing player with an intent to injure and a dangerous situation for the lineman, all caused by the direct actions of Miro Karjalainen (#38).
The CHL Sports Board suspends Miro Karjalainen (#38) of HPK Hämeenlinna for 1 game, effective immediately, and fines him €600.
