"We want to succeed in the Champions Hockey League, it is a big challenge for us."Antti Pennanen, Head Coach of HPK Hämeenlinna
HPK Hämeenlinna were founded in 1929 and are widely known throughout Finland for their unusual, yet traditional colours – orange, black and white. Nicknamed the “Hockey playing knights” a knight also features in their logo. They have become a traditional club in the Finnish Liiga, as they have featured in the league continuously for over 30 years.
Under head coach Antti Pennanen, who is serving his fourth season at the club, HPK secured CHL qualification for the first time ever in their history. They surprised many by going on to win the Liiga Championship from a fifth-place regular season finish last season. This was only their second Championship to date, the first being in 2006.
This new found form has propelled them into the Champions Hockey League where they will compare themselves with Europe’s elite.
