KalPa Kuopio are based in Kuopio, Finland, though they were originally founded in 1929 as Sortavalan Palloseura in Sortavala. Today, KalPa are a respected member of the Liiga, Finland’s top professional league.
The team plays their home games at Olvi Areena, a modern arena with a capacity of about 5,300. The venue is known for its lively atmosphere and strong local support, helping KalPa maintain a solid home-ice advantage. KalPa have deep roots in the Kuopio community and are partly owned by former NHL stars Sami Kapanen, Kimmo Timonen, and Scott Hartnell, who have all contributed to the club’s growth and success.
KalPa’s major achievements include silver medals in the 1990/91 and 2016/17 Liiga seasons, a bronze medal in 2008/09, and an international highlight: winning the Spengler Cup in 2018. The team have also reached the Liiga finals, most notably in 1991, when they were runners-up to TPS Turku.
Their major achievement came in 2025 when they won their first-ever Liiga title and were crowned champions of Finland.
The club have developed several top-level players who went on to have careers in the NHL, including Sami Kapanen, Kimmo Timonen, Olli Jokinen, Kasperi Kapanen, Artturi Lehkonen, and Alexandre Texier. These alumni underscore KalPa’s reputation for producing elite talent and fostering player development.
With strong ownership, a passionate fanbase, and a growing international profile, KalPa continues to be a key presence in Finnish hockey, blending tradition with modern competitiveness.
The club have played in four past Champions Hockey League seasons, making it as far as the Round of 16.
