The ice hockey club formerly known as HC 98 was founded in Munich on 19 January 1998. Just 12 years after it was founded, the club was promoted from the Bezirksliga to Germany's top league. The club's most successful season to date was 2009-10, when the team lifted the DEB (German Ice Hockey Federation) trophy and also won the 2. Bundesliga championship.
Winning the second tier of ice hockey in Germany saw the club promoted to the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). In only their first season, they finished in eighth place and qualified for the first round of the playoffs.
This made EHC the first promoted team in the history of the DEL to have qualified for the playoffs in its premier season. Red Bull became sole owner of the club in May 2013, since when the Bavarian-based club has been officially known as EHC Red Bull München.
The team has had big success in Germany in recent years, winning three of the last four national and Regular Season titles. They were also the first German team to reach the CHL Final.
