Wednesday night in Košice, Adler Mannheim defenseman John Gilmour (#7) was involved in an incident deemed Boarding.
According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the CHL PSC, John Gilmour (#7) of Adler Mannheim, will receive supplementary discipline under Boarding - IIHF Rule 41.
As the video shows, Košice defenseman Cooper Zech is skating through the neutral zone with puck possession as Gilmour angles off in pursuit of Zech. The moment Zech makes a pass back, Gilmour finishes a check, driving Zech dangerously into the wall, resulting in a 5-minute + Game Misconduct being assessed by the on-ice officials. The push from behind did cause an apparent injury at time, but Zech did maintain playing shortly after.
This is Boarding.
It is important to note that while Zech does do a pass back, altering his body position to expose his back and unaware due to following the path of the puck, he does alter just prior to and not simultaneously with contact in a way that turns a legal check into an illegal one. The oneness is on Gilmour to deliver this check in a legal fashion, minimise the force of the contact or avoid the hit entirely. Instead, he hits into Zech from behind through an arm extension push at a height and position from behind, driving Zech dangerously into the boards.
The CHL Sport Disciplinary Board suspends John Gilmour (#7) of Adler Mannheim for 1 game, effective immediately, and fines him €700. In addition, John Gilmour (#7) of Adler Mannheim, will be considered a repeat offender in the event supplementary discipline is required within the CHL.
