The 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships begin today in Buffalo, with several names you will recognize and may have seen live.
One of the star names at this year's World Juniors is Rasmus Dahlin. The 17-year-old projected top pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft is already a CHL champion with Frölunda from last season and scored two goals in this year's competition before his team was knocked out. Sweden's team also includes two players from the Växjö Lakers: defenceman Linus Högberg, a Philadelphia Flyers prospect who has two points in nine games for the semi-finalists, and forward Elias Pettersson, a Vancouver Canucks first-rounder, has four goals and three assists in as many games for the team too. New York Rangers draft pick Lias Andersson, with four CHL points for the Frölunda Indians, is also on the roster along with Brynäs IF's Jesper Boqvist and HV71 Jönköping d-man Erik Brännström, prospects of the New Jersey Devils and Vegas Golden Knights, respectively.
For the Czech Republic, Carolina Hurricanes first-rounder Martin Nečas has a goal and an assist in two CHL games this season for Kometa Brno, while projected 1998 pick Kryštof Hrabík played in five games for Bílí Tygři Liberec - notching one goal as well.
Finnish netminder Niilo Halonen played two CHL games, with a save percentage of .925, while Dallas Stars prospect Miro Heiskanen, Juha Jääska (all of IFK Helsinki) and Ottawa Senators prospect Markus Nurmi (TPS Turku) have all played in the CHL this season – the latter two both scoring.
On the Swiss roster, Washington Capitals prospect Tobias Geisser and projected 1998 pick Nando Eggenberger both played a handful of games in the CHL this year for EV Zug and HC Davos, respectively, while Andre Heim was part of SC Bern's roster for nine of their CHL contests.
Denmark call-ups Christian Wejse and Andreas Grundrvig both featured for Esbjerg in the group stage, while Vegas draft pick Jonas Røndbjerg has three goals in 10 CHL games this season for Växjö. Their roster also includes a couple of players who played towards the end of the group stage for the Malmö Redhawks.
