The 2024 Champions Hockey League Final is getting closer and closer and both our Finalists, Genève-Servette and Skellefteå AIK, have played their final domestic league games and are now fully focused on the all-or-nothing game ahead!
How have their last five games panned out and in what form do they enter the final game of the season? Let's find out!
Genève-Servette
The reigning Swiss champions enter the CHL Final with a mediocre five-game report of just two wins in their last five games. With just three NL games under their belt in February, Genève have played two games less than Skellefteå in the same amount of time.
Jussi Olkinuora has manned the net in all but their last game this Friday against HC Davos (where Genève suffered a tough 6-1 loss). In total, Genève have let in 17 goals in five games - ouch.
On the flip side, the effectiveness of their players up front has been solid, though you could argue 'not good enough' given the recent losses. Genève have scored at least once in not just their last five games, but as far as their last nine games (ten if we include Genève's CHL Semi-Finals Return Game against Lukko Rauma back in mid-January). With 13 goals in five games, they're doing OK here.
Where they are not doing as well is the NL standings where the CHL Finalists sit in the bottom half of the 14-strong table (currently around the 8th-place mark and points-wise oriented more downward than upward). All in all, not an ideal place to be with the chance of European silverware just 60 minutes of game time away.
Despite that, we spoke to goalie Olkinuora a week ago and he highlighted "awesome defending and penalty kill" - watch out for that!
Skellefteå AIK
Compared to their hosts, SHL side Skellefteå enter the CHL Final with a near-perfect 4/5 record. The three-time Swedish champions (most recently in 2014) have scored an average of three goals a game, which is ever so slightly better than Genève's record, and are currently on a four-game winning streak.
Three of their last five games have gone to overtime - two ending in victory, one ending in a shootout loss. We've already noted that Skellefteå have played two games more than Genève this month - if that means they're in better match form or are on the other hand tired out is impossible to judge.
There's been some division of duties in net, as both Gustaf Lindvall and Linus Söderström have spent time between the posts. Lindvall has the edge in the five-game comparison but extend the bracket to six and it's a 50-50 split meaning they're currently on a fixed rotation scheme.
Regardless of the goalie, Skellefteå have let in an average of two goals per game and no more than three in a game throughout their February history leading up the 2024 CHL Final. The nine-time CHL qualifiers sit fourth in the SHL standings, just points off the table-toppers and in prime position for a decent crack at the title.
A stat that's recently blown up on the internet is Skellefteå's current PP% which is currently ranked best in the WORLD! Just let that sink in...
