After coming through 12 games each over four rounds, and some scares on the way, Luleå Hockey and the Frölunda Indians were the final two teams left standing in the 2014/15 Champions Hockey League season.
Luleå's better record over the previous 12 games saw them get given the honour of hosting the first-ever final, and a sold-out crowd of 6,300 packed into their arena to see it happen.
With it being the first-ever CHL Final, the event in itself was full of firsts – and the game was the first 'one-off, winner takes all' game of the CHL Playoffs. However, some things from that Final still stand today: it's still the only Final to be contested by two teams from the same country, and the only one to see a team come back from two goals down to win.
Frölunda led by a pair after 20 minutes thanks to two names that would become pretty well known in the CHL over the next few seasons – Joel Lundqvist and Mathis Olimb. The game changed on a match penalty called on Oscar Fantenberg, with Luleå tying the game and scoring the go-ahead goal on the same powerplay. Swiss international Dean Kukan, now in the NHL, scored the empty-net goal with 1:24 to play which sealed the title for the hosts!
"It was the story of our Playoff games in the CHL this season," said captain Chris Abbott after lifting the title, alluding to another of his side's comebacks. "Down by two goals heading into the third period, but we found a way to get it done. I can't say enough about the fans here in the arena.
"I think everybody, to a man, was pretty hacked off being down after two periods, but we knew we were still in it and had 20 minutes to turn it around. We never doubted ourselves for a minute."
