Daniel Catenacci (#7) of HC Bolzano, time 48:56, was involved in an incident deemed as Illegal check to the head or neck (IIHF Rule 48). The video evidence has determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’.
According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the CHL PSC, Catenacci will receive supplementary discipline for Illegal check to the head or neck - IIHF Rule 48.
Tuesday night (05.10.2021) in Salzburg, Bolzano forward Catenacci used an illegal action, deemed as an Illegal check to the head or neck.
As the video shows, with Salzburg forward, #71 Jan-Mikael Jarvinen receiving a drop pass immediately after entering the Salzburg attacking zone and Bolzano collapsing in the immediate area to minimize room and skating lanes, the play occurs very quickly in real time. Additionally, in the tight area and Jarvinen realizing this, he has no option but to make a quick play, which altered his body position from forehand to backhand, which means his body altered before contact occurred. Although the body change of Jarvinen may have contributed to the contact, it was not determined the main cause of receiving head contact.
With Catenacci as the lead defensive player and approaching from a lateral skating lane, the time of occurrence is quick, and the space is limited.
The reason for supplementary discipline, is the body check Catenacci did, started off with the right intentions of making a body-to-body check and some body contact was made. However, immediately before contact, Catenacci elevated up and into the head area of Jarvinen, making contact to the head area. It is considered the responsibility of Catenacci to stay plain, not alter his body position up and avoid contact to the head area of Jarvinen. The body check Jarvinen recieved did cause an apparent injury at the time of incident, however, Jarvinen continued playing on the ensuing powerplay and remainder of the game.
The CHL Sports Board suspends Daniel Catenacci (#7) of HC Bolzano for two games and issue a fine of €1,900, effective immediately. One game for the present illegal checking to the head or neck incident and one game under the repeat offender act.
In addition, Catenacci will be considered a multiple repeat offender in the event supplementary discipline is required within the CHL.
