Jacob Gammelgaard (#28) of Rungsted Seier Capital was involved in an incident deemed as an illegal check to the head or neck (IIHF Rule 48) during Wednesday's game against the Rouen Dragons at time 42:12. The video evidence has determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 2 – ‘Reckless’.
According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the CHL PSC, Gammelgaard will receive supplementary discipline under Illegal check to the head or neck - IIHF Rule 48.
Wednesday night (06.10.2021) in Rouen, Rungsted defender Gammelgaard used an illegal action, deemed as an Illegal check to the head or neck.
As the video shows, with Rouen forward, #67 David Gilbert in pursuit of a wrap-around outlet pass, he plays the puck from his backhand side. With the puck along the boards, Gilbert has limited possibilities of how he pursues the puck. Gilbert is aware of his surroundings and does look up ice while in pursuit of the puck, to know and was aware of Gammelgaard approaching from the high side.
With Gilbert having to have, at minimum, an awareness of the puck approaching from his backside, he is considered in a vulnerable position. This means, instead of accelerating through or taking advantage of, Gammelgaard must have regard for the puck, must not take advantage of and must have the responsibility to avoid an illegal means of making contact. Instead, Gammelgaard approached from the high side which allowed an acceleration into the check. The acceleration into the check, combined with left shoulder (contact point) elevation was the cause of head area contact as the primary contact point and body contact as secondary. The check to the head area did cause an apparent injury to Gilbert at the time, however, Gilbert did return to play the remainder of the game.
The CHL Sports Board suspends Jacob Gammelgaard (#28) of Rungsted Seier Capital for two games and issue a fine of €1,400, effective immediately.
In addition, Gammelgaard will be considered a repeat offender in the event supplementary discipline is required within the CHL.
