A spectacular end to the 2022/23 season last Saturday saw Finnish side Tappara Tampere beat Swedish side Luleå Hockey 3-2 in the 2023 Champions Hockey League Final in Luleå, Sweden, meaning the European Trophy is back in Finland for the first time since 2018.
But that was just the culmination of an action-packed season across the board in which we saw many players really rise to the occasion and hold their teams when the going got tough. But our Team of the Season for 2022/23 only has six spots - here's our pick of the truly best!
Goaltender - Christian Heljanko
Tappara Tampere's Christian Heljanko, now also goes by CHL Champion Heljanko, was named man of the match of the 2023 CHL Final, whilst also receiving the prestigious LGT MVP Award for best player of the season. If that's not all you need to secure a spot on the Team of the Season, these stats are - the 25-year-old Finnish international ends 2022/23 with a 95.12% Save Percentage, one of the best in the CHL this season, having let only 1.33 goals into his net on average per game, and a CHL-leading four shutouts to his name.
Defenceman - Julius Honka
Luleå Hockey's Julius Honka was a consistent and important member of the Swedish team's line-up throughout their 2022/23 CHL campaign that saw them go all the way to the all-or-nothing Final unbeaten.
Though the 27-year-old ex-NHLer missed out on the chance to add the title of European Club Champion to his resumé, he racked up seven points (3G, 4A) in 12 games and ends 2022/23 as the plus/minus leader with an outstanding +14!
Overall, Honka proved himself as a strong and dependable D-man who is strong on the puck and can drive it up the ice, while also being able to let it loose when the chance arises.
Defenceman - Valtteri Kemiläinen
Tappara's Valtteri Kemiläinen hasn't missed a single season of the CHL since the inaugural season of 2014/15. He's had better and worse performances over the years, but this season he really stepped up his game and was a key member of Tappara's Champions Hockey League-winning squad.
The now two-time holder of the title of European Club Champion scored 3G + 3A for a total of 6 points, leading his team in points scored by a defenceman, but more importantly, his permanent position in the Finnish team's first line saw him make some huge plays on their road to the Final earning him a certain position in our Team of the Season.
Forward - Brian O'Neill
EV Zug's Brian O'Neill is just one of those players that can do everything. The 34-year-old ex-Nhler might be in his first season with Zug, and got his first taste of the CHL for that matter, but he didn't need much time to adjust because he went on to score 17 points (6G, 11A) in the pan-European competition in 2022/23, landing him second place behind Lasch on the CHL's Top Scorer chart.
With a record of over 1.4 points per game, the forward skated out for each and every Zug game in 2022/23 and displayed how the perfect modern forward who can transition through roles on the attack can really hit teams where it hurts.
O'Neill scored in regulation, in overtime, in equal strength situations and on the powerplay, but his most important goal was an OT game-winner against Mountfield HK in their Quarter-Finals Return Game.
His goal, a nifty solo spin in tight space in front of the net, lifted his team over the Czechs and secured Swiss side Zug their first-ever place in the CHL Semi-Finals.
Forward - Juhani Tyrväinen
It doesn't often happen that a team make it all the way to a CHL Final unbeaten. So when one does, you really have to take a look at their roster to see how they managed to do so. And on Luleå's roster, one player is impossible to miss, with his name shining in bold at the very top of most charts - Juhani Tyrväinen.
The 32-year-old recorded a personal best in the CHL in 2022/23, scoring 5G and 9A for a combined 14 points in 11 games played. He also notched one goal in the ultimate game of the season - the 2023 CHL Final, and was on the ice for over 22 minutes.
He had a huge impact on their play in 2022/23, transitioning through many roles on the attack and jumping on for powerplays as often as he could. Tyrväinen also wore the Top Scorer jersey for the majority of the season.
Forward - Ryan Lasch
Frölunda Gothenburg winger Ryan Lasch had another amazing season in the CHL and ended 2022/23 as the LGT Top Scorer for a record fifth time!
Lasch, a three-time CHL Champion, recorded 7G and 15A this season, adding to his already astonishing stats in Europe's biggest club ice hockey competition. Though the American-born sharpshooter missed out on the chance to contest the 2023 CHL Final, he still proved instrumental in Frölunda's run to the Semi-Finals.
The 36-year-old is the CHL's All-Time Top Scorer with 131 points (40G, 91A) and became the first player to break the 100 points barrier in the pan-European competition last season. What's next for this living legend?
