A spectacular end to the big 10th anniversary season of the Champions Hockey League was only a few weeks ago when ZSC Lions Zurich beat Färjestad Karlstad 2-1 in CHL Final 2025 to keep the European Trophy in Switzerland for a second year running!
But that was just the culmination of an action-packed year across the board in which we saw many players really rise to the occasion and hold their teams when the going got tough. Unfortunately, our Team of the Season for 2024/25 only has six spots, so here's our pick of the truly best!
GK - Matthew Greenfield
Sheffield Steelers goaltender Matthew Greenfield played in all eight of his team's games this season and more often than not played a decisive role in them!
Greenfield made over 220 saves across the Regular Season and Round of 16, letting an average of just over 2.4 goals hit the back of the net per game. His resulting save average is just shy of the 93% mark and ranks him as one of the best in the league when filtering through goalies who played eight or more games over the course of the 2024/25 season.
When analysing the 30-year-old goalie's game, look no further than his Game Day 6 outing against strong Czech Extraliga side Dynamo Pardubice where the Florida native made crucial saves in the game to seal Sheffield's amazing win, ending the night with a huge 96% save percentage.
D - Ryan Murphy
Red Bull Salzburg had a really strong run in the 2024/25 season of the Champions Hockey League, making it to the Quarter-Finals for only the second time ever and it was because of strong and experienced players like Ryan Murphy on their line-up.
The Canadian D-man didn't miss a game for his club all season long and played an important role not just on the blue line and in guarding the net, but also up front and on special unit play where he racked up a strong nine points in ten games played.
His three goals, six assists, one game-winner and one powerplay goal, accompanied by a massive 22+ minutes of time on ice per game make him an irreplaceable player who knows how to handle the pressure of international club ice hockey.
D - Kai Wissmann
Eisbären Berlin's Kai Wissmann is a defenceman that puts in the work each and every game. The 28-year-old German international played nine games in Europe's elite club ice hockey competition in 2024/25, scoring nine points (1G, 8A).
At 194 cm and 93 kg, he's a towering figure on the ice, facing opposition defencemen face to face with his back to the net. A quick scroll through his other stats reveals the three-time DEL champion has recorded an average of over 24 minutes of time on ice per game played and really put himself on the line with 16 blocked shots.
All in all, Wissmann is the last player we would like to see in between us and the goalie and that's exactly what a D-man needs.
FW - Sven Andrighetto
No team of the season would be complete without ZSC Lions Zurich's Sven Andrighetto. The 31-year-old was on absolute fire on Europe's biggest club ice hockey stage, ending 2024/25 with a whopping 22 points (10G, 12A) in 12 games played and with the LGT Top Scorer and LGT MVP Award in his pocket.
The former Montréal Canadien and Colorado Avalanche forward wasn't as prolific in the Regular Season, but when the intensity really ramped up in the knockout rounds, he hit the ice running.
A healthy split of goals (four of which were scored on the powerplay) and assists have made the Zurich player a nuisance for both goalies and defencemen and helped the Swiss side to lift the European Trophy just a few weeks back.
FW - Michael Špaček
For a large portion of 2024/25, Michael Špaček was the king of goal scorers, and he split some of them between two clubs after making a mid-season switch from 2023/24 CHL Champions Genève-Servette to 2024/25 Semi-Finalists Sparta Prague.
The 27-year-old Czech forward was running riot in the Regular Season, picking up a spectacular 12 points (7G, 5A) across the first phase of the competition for his former employers in Genève. His speciality? How lethal he is on powerplays and in crucial game moments, backed up by not one, not two but a whole five powerplay goals and a game-winner to his name.
For Sparta, he made an immediate impact when he scored on his club debut in the Champions Hockey League against the Växjö Lakers and recorded three points (1G, 2A) in four games played with the Czech club on their quest to the Semi-Finals.
To summarise, the former Frölunda Gothenburg and Tappara Tampere player is the complete forward and he's proved that not just to us pan-European hockey fans, but everywhere his hockey career has taken him.
FW - Oskar Steen
The 2024/25 CHL season may not have ended on a high for Färjestad Karlstad's Oskar Steen, but on a personal level, the 26-year-old was a prolific and extremely strong forward for the CHL Finalists.
With 18 points (6G, 12A) in 13 games played and a sparkling +10 +/-, the Swede has been a workhorse. His strong performance in 2024/25 wasn't just up front, as he also ended the season with a very nice eight blocked shots and seven hits.
The cherry on top is his extremely strong face-off percentage which approached the stunning 70% mark across the past season of Europe's elite club ice hockey competition.
