Just 76 seconds from the end of their game in Liberec, Augsburger Panther made history as they advanced to the Champions Hockey League playoffs in their debut season in the competition.
With chants of "Fight until the end" echoing around the arena from nearly 1,000 travelling fans, it was the German side who got the crucial goal to ensure they'd be playing in the Round of 16 - something Steffen Tölzer can still hardly describe.
"We managed to make history with Augsburg. We are not finished yet, but it's just an absolutely cool feeling," began the Panthers captain. "Liberec were extremely strong in front of their own fans. They put tremendous pressure on us. At the end the guys proved team cohesion and probably deserved to win at the end."
Augsburg were backed by another army of travelling fans in Liberec, something Tölzer wanted to pay tribute to. "It was already the case in Sweden and Belfast, and again in Libreec they were unbelievable," he recalled. "As a player, you can just be proud and only only thank them for their support. I hope we can reward the fans with the victory and the next round."
Making the playoffs of any competition is somewhat of a new experience for the team, having failed to reach the post-season in their own league for several years before last season. "It's great for us - we didn't manage to experience a lot of playoffs in Aubsgurg in recent years to be honest!" Tölzer explained. "This is the first year here, we are very happy with it and of course we want to give everything so that we go as far as possible."
