The CHL's Sports Board has ruled to suspend John Quenneville of ZSC Lions Zurich for two games over an incident that took place in Thursday's Game Day 1 clash with IFK Helsinki.
In the game, Quenneville was adjudged to have made an illegal play at 29:05. The play falls under IIHF Rule 48 (Checking to the head or neck) and was deemed to be worthy of supplementary discipline.
After a center zone face-off, the puck was drawn back by Helsinki. Otto Salin was in possession of the puck and was skating in the neutral zone to make an outlet pass.
Salin made the pass and his focus remained on the puck, and not on Quenneville, who was approaching to make the body check.
Although the check may seem unsuspecting, Salin does hold some responsibility to be suspecting of a potential body check. However, the responsibility is considered greater for Quenneville, who is making the check, to do so in a legal manner.
The reason for supplementary discipline is the manner in which Quenneville delivered the check. It is determined that Quenneville elevated up and into the head area with direct contact to the head area of Salin. The head contact is considered avoidable. The check is determined reckless.
As a result, the CHL Sports Board ruled to suspend John Quenneville for two games and issue a fine of €1,400, effective immediately.
