In a battle of two teams that have struggled this season, both in the CHL and domestically, KalPa broke out with a 7-1 victory, which assures them 3rd place in Group B. Janne Tavi scored twice in a winning cause.
KalPa grabbed firm control of the game in the first half of the first period. Mathew Maione opened the scoring with a one-timer through a crowd on the power play at 5:23, then Tovi’s first of the game just 38 seconds later made it 2-0, beating Jakob Opsahl high to the stick side from the right-wing faceoff dot. Then at 9:02 it was Tommi Jokinen on KalPa’s second power play of the game, beating Opsahl with a backhander in close.
Tony Romano got Stavanger on the board late in the first period on a nice individual effort, beating Riku Helenius upstairs from right in front, but that was the Oilers’ only goal of the night. Mikko Nuutinen restored KalPa’s three-goal lead early in the second with a nice wrister off the rush, and then they added three more goals in the third period to run up the score.
