- Brian O'Neill scored in OT to lift Zug
- Both goalies were spectacular on the night
- Zug moving on to the Semi-Finals for the first time
Brian O'Neill scored the game-winner in OT as EV Zug defeated Mountfield HK 4-3 on aggregate to advance to the Champions Hockey League Semi-Finals for the first time in their CHL tenure. Leonardo Genoni made 28 saves on the night.
Sides exchanged powerplays in the opening frame with plenty of shots peppering the netminders, but both goalies were up to the task as Genoni turned aside his nine shots while Henri Kiviaho stopped all eight that he faced to keep the clubs knotted at 0-0 after 20 minutes.
Zug had a trio of grade-A opportunities, headlined by a Sven Senteler penalty shot attempt, but failed to capitalise. Meanwhile, the Czechs had a chance late on a breakaway that was denied by Genoni's right pad.
Both clubs continued contesting their respective offensive zones in the second, but it would be Zug's Justin Abdelkader, skating in his second CHL game, who would open the scoring. The play was briefly reviewed but ultimately stood.
An initial shot hit off the forward who stayed with the play and managed to find the puck in the crease and guide it into the back of the net while on his back to give his side a 3-2 aggregate lead.
Mountfield answered with their own marker just over four minutes later when Aleš Jergl received the puck in the slot and slid it on the backhand as it trickled through Genoni's pads to put the Czechs on the board.
Dangerous chances were had at both ends but magnificent goaltending continued to be the story of the night as the score remained deadlocked in the third.
Kiviaho was the more active of the two early on, making some timely saves to keep his club in it, while Genoni stonewalled the visitors' efforts as play progressed past the halfway mark. Both teams put pressure on the opposing netminders for the remainder of regulation, but with neither side budging, overtime followed.
Four minutes in, the home crowd erupted when O'Neill, Zug's leading scorer, made a nifty spin-o-rama in tight space before bringing the puck to his forehand and sliding it past Kiviaho to lift his team over Mountfield and secure safe passage on to the Semi-Finals.
