- Frölunda net a powerplay goal in the first
- Mountfield net three goals in the second to take the lead
- Mountfield's Jan Růžička sensational between the pipes
The match-up between the two top teams in Group G would see Mountfield HK secure an impressive 5-3 win over Frölunda Gothenburg, breaking the winning streak of the Swedes.
Mountfield faltered early with a penalty for too many men, and did well to limit Frölunda's chances. Two penalties in succession would see the Czech side get back-to-back man-advantage moments, but they couldn't generate any magic on netminder Lars Johansson.
With a little over five minutes left in the period, Frölunda found themselves in a 5-on-3 situation. Jere Innala, still bleeding from a high stick to the face, lined up a one-timer from Ryan Lasch to beat Jan Růžička and make it 1-0 for the Swedes. Another penalty called on Mountfield saw a second 5-on-3 for the Swedes, but was killed off just in time for the period intermission.
Both sides traded moments of dominant puck control in the second stanza, but it would be Mountfield who would strike first. The equaliser netted by Czech native Radek Smoleňák sailed high over the glove of Johansson to make it 1-1.
A tripping penalty saw the visitors secure an opportunity to recapture the lead, however, Mountfield had other ideas. A stretch pass to Jakub Lev was fed to Russian forward Nikita Ščerbak who ripped the one-timer past the glove of Johansson making it 2-1 for the hosts. Less than two minutes later, Kevin Klíma would extend their lead to 3-1, this time off a loose rebound.
Frölunda's penalty off the opening faceoff in the third period was a less than ideal start, but Nicklas Lasu caught a breakaway and was able to draw a penalty shot. Růžička squared up to the penalty shot taker, Innala, to preserve the vital two-point lead.
Radek Smoleňák would make it 4-1, scoring from below the goal line, while Růžička was on point stonewalling multiple attempts by the Swedes.
With under six minutes remaining a penalty by the hosts allowed Frölunda to cut the deficit to 4-2. Max Friberg stepped in from behind the goal line to jam the puck in.
Another Swedish goal would follow, this time from blueliner Petteri Lindbohm making it 4-3. Frölunda pulled their goalie in the hopes to equalise, but an empty-netter from Kevin Klíma sealed the deal for Mountfield.
The 5-3 victory gives Mountfield an additional three points, which puts them on par with Frölunda, at nine points apiece in the Group Stage standings.
