- Skellefteå lead 2-0 after a heated first period
- Rickard Hugg nets back-to-back goals in less than two minute in the second period
- Třinec outshot Skellefteå 35-24
Oceláři Třinec had a huge third period, but their efforts weren't enough to overpower Skellefteå AIK who secured an early lead, and took the game 5-4 in regulation.
The lamp was lit by Skellefteå just 1:28 minutes into the opening period, giving the visiting side an early 1-0 lead over Třinec. Forward Tom Kühnhackl waltzed his way into the slot to net his first goal of the game, and the season, with a chip over the blocker of netminder Marek Mazanec.
Skellefteå Netminder Gustav Lindvall was tested moments later, with a peppering from the hosts. The Czech side collected their first powerplay of the game, but their best attempt was swallowed up in the yellow jersey of Lindvall. With the penalty kill over, the Swedes responded with goal two of the night, a rebound goal by Max Lindholm.
A heated net-front scrum saw both sides penalised and a 4-on-4 ensue. Minutes later the Swedes got their first man-advantage chance, but they couldn't find any special-team success before the sides headed to the locker rooms for their first break.
Heading into the second period, Mazanec was superb with a string of big saves to keep his side in the game. At 29:19 Třinec got on the scoreboard with a powerplay goal, and cut the lead of the Swedes in half. Lindvall caught a piece of Tomáš Marcinko's shot, but not enough to stop it from reaching the back of the net.
The response from Skellefteå was almost instant as 23-year-old Rikard Hugg skated his way into the slot to beat Mazanec glove-side and make it 3-1. Hugg would strike again, sending in a bullet from the highslot and extending the lead to 4-1 for the Swedes.
Marko Dańo cut Skellefteå's lead to 4-2 with less than two minutes remaining in the stanza after he picked up a rebound right on the doorstep of Lindvall.
A one-timer from Jonathan Pudas put the Swedes ahead 5-2 at 45:01. Martin Růžička caught a turnover which saw the forward rush in, pull to the backhand and slot the puck in, to narrow the differential to two goals.
Ill tempers resulted in the second 4-on-4 of the night, and a additional penalty would follow for Skellefteå, allowing the Czechs to claw their way back into contention. A crucial one-timer from Růžička made it 4-5 for the hosts, and with momentum shifting in favor of the hosts, Lindvall faced a barrage of shots.
With 40 seconds remaining, and an offensive zone face off for Třinec, Mazanec was pulled for a last chance to equalise, but it wasn't to be. The final buzzer would sound a 5-4 victory in favour of the visitors.
