- Both sides scored on the powerplay
- Florian Baltram scored in OT to lift Salzburg
- Stavanger came back twice to force the extra session
Florian Baltram scored the OT game-winner and Atte Tolvanen made 20 saves as Red Bull Salzburg took down the Stavanger Oilers to open up their 2022/23 CHL campaign.
The hosts kept Henrik Holm busy through the first 20 minutes with what few golden opportunities there were from either side, as an uneventful first saw both clubs knotted at zero apiece heading into the second period.
Six minutes into the middle stanza, Salzburg would finally find the twine on a Troy Bourke powerplay tally. Bourke handled a point pass from Dennis Robertson and took his time in the left circle before finally ripping it past Holm to put his squad up by one.
Stavanger eventually evened things up when Bryce Gervais slid one past Tolvanen three minutes into the third. The tie-breaker wasn't far behind, however, as three minutes later Salzburg's Peter Schneider would cash in on snap shot from the left circle to give the lead right back to the Austrian side.
Things would get interesting again two minutes later when Stavanger, now on the powerplay, succeeded in capitalising on the man-advantage with a floater from Paul Bittner who notched his first of the competition.
The drama continued in the extra session with the two sides tied after 60 minutes.
Salzburg began OT on the powerplay as they continued doing what they had done all night long - hemming the visitors in their own zone and pelting the netminder with pucks. It finally paid off as Baltram scored his first CHL goal on a spectacular backhand deke to give the home side their first check in the win column.
