Tappara Tampere lost their first game of the season to Rapperswil-Jona Lakers who take two points and most importantly their first-ever win in the Champions Hockey League.
A goalless first period saw both teams figure each other out. Tappara mounted the first attacks, before the tide switched in Rapperswil's favour. Tappara's Mikael Seppälä was called for holding at 7:26, offering the away team the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock, but it didn't materialise. With 20 minutes of game time up, the two sides left for the locker rooms with the score 0-0.
The second period saw the first goal of the game as Roman Červenka danced in the circle in front of the Tappara net on the úpowerplay before letting one loose at Christian Heljanko.
It took Tappara until the third period to find a response but once they did, they found more than one.
Kristian Tanus knocked the puck into the Rapperswil net from within the crease after some quick passes found his stick and most importantly the netting of the away goal. His goal at 43:41 was followed up on by Mikael Seppälä at 48:35 to put Tappara into a 2-1 lead.
Now losing, Rapperswil pushed for the equaliser but it seemed out of their reach. At 53:23, Veli-Matti Savinainen was sent to the sin bin for tripping offering Rapperswil a late powerplay to tie the game, but nothing came of it.
With just two minutes of the game left, the away team pulled their goalie for an extra skater out front and the move that usually ends with a +1 on the winning team's score payed off big time for the Swiss! The extra man made space for Nando Eggenberger who redirected a Jordan Schroeder rocket from the blue line into the Tappara net with a minute and a half remaining on the clock.
With 60 minutes of game time up, and a score locked at 2-2, the game headed to OT.
Both teams cautiously tested each other in the opening minutes of 3-on-3 play, with Heljanko pulling off an out-of-this-world save to keep Tappara in the game. Rapperswil were very active in OT, pressing high up the ice and chasing the puck and that nearly paid off when Roman Červenka stole a puck from a Tappara defender and found himself in front of net alone. But before he could shoot, he was ushered away and held by Savinainen which the referees deemed hooking, sending him off the ice for the third time in the game.
With the extra skater, Rapperswil had two minutes to score, but Heljanko made save after save to keep the Finns in the game.
1:30 into the OT powerplay, Rapperswil finally got the goal they were so desperately hunting, as Jordan Schroeder fired through Heljanko after some rapid passing play from the Rapperswil special team.
