- Early lead for Belfast who scored two in the opening period
- Bolzano got 16 minutes of powerplay time but failed to convert
- Belfast's Tyler Beskorowany with a huge shutout performance
Belfast's SSE Arena was packed for Game Day 4 of the Champions Hockey League season, and the game didn't disappoint. Four goals would secure the Belfast Giants' first win, and their first three points of the Regular Season.
The scoring was spread over three of Belfast's four lines, while netminder Tyler Beskorowany made 28 saves on the night to bring home the win for his team and secure his first shutout of the CHL season.
Belfast opened up the scoring at 6:53 after a wrap-around pass from American forward Greg Printz ended up square on the blade of compatriot Quinn Preston to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Bolzano countered with a fair number of chances but Beskorowany was superb at denying all rebounds.
Bolzano had four minutes of man-advantage time thanks to interference calls on both Mark Garside and Oliver Cooper, and despite setting up well, the visiting side had no luck finding the back of the net.
The crowd would erupt a second time thanks to a slapshot from Canadian forward Daniel Tedesco who extended Belfast's lead to 2-0 with less than four minutes remaining in the first period.
With the intermission done, Bolzano were looking to counter-attack, however, Belfast had the upper hand on puck possession, forcing netminder Niklas Svedberg to come up with crucial saves to stave off the advances of the Giants. A cross-checking call saw Bolzano's Enrico Miglioranzi sent to the bin, but the hosts came up empty.
A duo of penalties in succession from Preston gave the Italians a golden opportunity to cut the lead in half, but the team from Northern Ireland managed a solid effort on the penalty kill before turning the tables. On even-strength play, Belfast's Mark Cooper dished a long pass to Kohei Sato who split Bolzano's defence and sent the puck through the five hole of Svedberg to make it 3-0 for the Giants.
Bolzano would have a huge chance to come back after two Belfast penalties saw a 5-on-3 in their favour but Beskorowany was in phenomenal form, stonewalling every attempt to keep Bolzano off the scoreboard.
If there was a ranking system for toughness, these two sides would be up there, because it was an intense final 20 minutes. A fight would result in a lengthy video review, and culminate in two players from each team being sent to the penalty box. Both teams, visibly agitated, managed an exhaustingly physical game where neither side would yield.
Despite Bolzano's best efforts to keep the game alive, Tedesco would decimate any chances of a comeback with goal number four at 50:07. The remaining minutes would see the visitors pull the trigger from every available angle but Beskorowany would close the game out with a well-deserved shutout.
The 4-0 win at home gives Belfast their first three points of the Regular Season, while a bruised Bolzano will head home with nothing to show for their efforts.
