- Both teams knew they were out of the Playoffs before the match
- Despite Bánská Bystrica going from 0-2 down to 3-2 up they lost the match
- Ambrì-Piotta narrowly miss out on the Playoffs in their debut CHL campagin - just a single point would have given them a chance of qualifying
HC05 Banská Bystrica mounted a second period comeback to go 3-2 ahead but HC Ambrì-Piotta fought back to win the game in the final minutes and end their debut CHL season on a high.
The home team started the match on the offensive and were already up just four minutes in thanks to Nick Plastino’s powerplay goal. Despite pushing Banská Bystrica and being the better team in the first third, they had to settle for only the one goal with 20 minutes of game time up.
When both teams returned to the ice it for the second period it was evident from the get-go that Banská Bystrica were more aggressive and fought for every puck. They pushed and pushed, and it was just a matter of time when one of their shots was going to go in, but it a surprising turn of events it was actually Ambrì-Piotta’s Matt D’Agostini who doubled his team’s lead to go 2-0 up. Ambrì-Piotta slowed down and played like the game was already over and that’s where their problems started, as 10 minutes in, Marek Biro lifted his shot into the top right-hand corner of Hrachovina’s net to score Bystrica’s first goal of the match and reduce the goal difference down to a single goal. With just two minutes remaining Ambrì-Piotta’s Bianchi had a big chance after winning the puck in the attacking zone but Matej Gajan was able to save his shot. 30 seconds before the end of the period Mário Luntner scored a tap in goal after a lovely solo effort from teammate Gilbert Gabor left the puck unattended in front of goalie Hrachovina. With another 20 minutes of game time up both teams left for the locker rooms tied at 2-2.
Just one minute into the third period Nick Plastino’s hooking penalty gave Banská Bystrica a powerplay to gain the lead for the first time in the game. They spent the first minute chasing the puck in their own third but ended up putting some serious pressure on Ambrì-Piotta’s net. Banská Bystrica’s Andrej Šťastný scored an audacious "Mike Legg" goal as he lifted the puck onto his stick and leaned over the net to place the puck behind the goalie’s back. After a lengthy video review the referees allowed the goal and gave Banská Bystrice the lead in the match. With Ambrì-Piotta down a goal and with the game slipping from their hands, the frustration on the ice was evident and it all overflew when Ambrì-Piotta’s Misha Moor and Banská Bystrica’s Michal Kabáč got into a fight. They were both given 2+2 penalties and sent to the locker rooms. With seven minutes of the game left, Ambrì-Piotta’s Robert Sabolič tapped in a shot to tie the game at 3-3. Both sides pushed to decide the game, but it was Ambrì-Piotta’s Dal Pian who overcame Banská Bystrica goalie Matej Gajan with a lovely solo effort that slid into the goal to win his side their final CHL game of the season.
