- Leonhard Pföderl: 2G, 2A 13:53 TOI
- SønderjyskE shutout for a third time
- Berlin qualify for the Round of 16 for the first time since the 2016/17 campaign
Eisbären Berlin cruised past SønderjyskE Vojens 8-0 to secure their place in the Round of 16 for the first time since the 2016/17 Champions Hockey League campaign. The Germans saw seven different players score for the club as they picked up their fourth win of the season in convincing fashion.
After their initial goal was called back for offside, the Germans would eventually break through, this time on the powerplay. Persistence paid off for Leonhard Pföderl who stuck with the puck and managed to find a corner to give Berlin a 1-0 edge.
Moments later, the hosts doubled their advantage on a wrap-around attempt by Korbinian Geibel. Geibel stayed with the play as he circled the back of the net and caught an unsuspecting Tobias Vilykke by surprise to secure his first of the competition.
The Germans continued to find the net, this time off a beautiful set-up play following a face-off win. Pföderl won the puck back to Zachary Boychuk who quickly slid it over to Ty Ronning as Ronning delivered a one-timer that beat Vilykke clean.
A fourth would come for Berlin just five seconds into their man advantage when Pföderl registered his second off a deflection as the Germans took a four-goal lead into the second.
That lead would increase to six shortly into the middle frame when Liam Kirk netted a powerplay tally on a 5-on-3 27 seconds into the period and Frederik Tiffels followed up with his second of the CHL season when he buried it a little over a minute later.
This led to a goaltender change for SønderjyskE as they brought in veteran Mattias Pettersson.
But it wouldn't help matters much as Pettersson was eventually beaten at point-blank range by Yannick Veilleux as he extended his club's lead to seven near the midway mark of the middle stanza.
Scoring wouldn't pick up again until the third when Berlin made it 8-0 courtesy of Lean Bergmann's third of the season, a wicked wrister from the slot that beat Pettersson top shelf.
With nothing going for the Danish, it was Berlin's game from start to finish as they dominated on both sides of the puck and engineered their best performance of the season so far.
