- Klagenfurt's Thomas Hundertpfund lights up the first period
- Donbass get on the scoreboard in the second and equalise in the third!
- Klagenfurt cinch the win in the dying minutes of the game
Visiting side KAC Klagenfurt had an ideal start to the game after a tripping penalty early in the first period by HC Donbass Donetsk defenceman Nikita Zhuldikov.
Klagenfurt converted, with forward Thomas Hundertpfund netting the first powerplay goal of the night for the Austrians. Hundertpfund made it 2-0 minutes later, with a perfectly-timed deke to the backhand, beating netminder Andrey Makarov.
Donbass caught a break, and their first powerplay of the night, after Martin Schumnig was sent to the bin for holding, but the hosts had no chance against Danish netminder Sebastian Dahm who denied their advances.
With less than a minute remaining in the first period, forward Samuel Witting extended Klagenfurt's lead 3-0 with a wristshot from the high-slot.
The second stanza saw the offensive efforts of Donbass finally rewarded, with forward Illia Korenchuk getting the hosts on the scoreboard to make it 3-1. Things got better for the Ukranian side after defenceman Thomas Vallant took a minor penalty for tripping.
Moments later, Donbass were handed a two-man advantage thanks to a slashing call on Manuel Ganahl. Despite peppering Dahm, frustratingly, the Ukranian hosts couldn't find the back of the net. Klagenfurt had several chances of their own, but Makarov was flawless, keeping his team in the game.
Heading into the third period, an odd-man rush saw Donbass forward, Feliks Morozov rifle the puck low, past Dahm to make it 3-2. The goal was the catalyst for Donbass, who upped their puck possession and threw everything they had in attempts to equalise.
A duo of minor penalties awarded to Klagenfurt provided the hosts with four more minutes of the man-advantage, and with less than five minutes on the clock, the persistent efforts of Donbass paid off. Belarusian forward Viktar Turkin sent the puck into the back of the net, to level the score 3-3.
With 1:18 remaining, Klagenfurt were able to reclaim the lead off a turnover, and thanks to a point blank shot by Johannes Bischofberger on the doorstep of Makarov.
The loss is heart breaking for Donbass who have come so close to victory on many occassions, while the Austrians continue their winning streak, and will look to secure the top spot in Group G.
