- Fribourg-Gottéron post a 3-0 first period
- Slovan Bratislava open up their scoring in the second period but its not enough
- The Swiss side record two solid wins at home
Suiting up for their second home game of the weekend, Fribourg-Gottéron were chasing a second win, this time against visiting side Slovan Bratislava. The Slovak side were hunting for their own first win after going down 5-3 to Swedish side Leksands IF on Friday.
A two minute minor penalty by Slovan's Matt McKenzie gave Fribourg their first man advantage of the night, and forward Killian Mottet was on task, jamming the puck in, off a shot from the blueline.
Forward and top scorer Nathan Marchon made it 2-0 for the hosts with a stunning tip from the high slot on Slovan's netminder Samuel Hlavaj, who had no chance. The Swiss side hit full stride registring their third of of the night thanks to a wristshot from forward Sandro Schmid.
Slovan made a brief adjustment in net, substituting out Hlavaj for Kristers Gudlevskis. The Slovak side weren't without opportunities in the first period, however Fribourg's netminder Connor Hughes wasn't letting anything slip through.
Minutes into the second period, defenceman Raphael Diaz gave Slovan their first powerplay of the night, but the visitors had no luck.
Slovan finally got on to the scoreboard seven minutes into the second period thanks to a booming point shot by captain Michal Sersen.
A minor penalty by Slovan's Michal Beňo gave Fribourg another powerplay, allowing David Desharnais to net his first goal of the night, making it 4-1 for the home side.
Slovan forward Tomáš Zigo cut Fribourg's lead in half (4-2) off a tip during the team's second powerplay.
The third period was a back and forth affair, with Slovan pushing hard to find more offensive opportunities, but with time trickling away the Slovaks weren't able to close the gap.
Slovan pulled their goalie in the dying minutes of the game, and a quick turnover saw defenceman Ryan Gunderson score on the empty net and secure Fribourg's second win of the weekend 5-2.
