Tensions were high from the opening face-off with both sides not giving an inch. At 3:38 into the first stanza 33-year-old forward, Justin Azevedo pounced on a loose puck, off a rebound at point blank range giving the Swiss side an early 1-0 lead.

ZSC Lions Zurich's Patrick Geering took the first penalty of the game, but the hosts couldn't capitalise with the man advantage. Shortly after Phil Baltisberger was sent to the box for a cross-checking penalty. Joel Lundqvist had a sensational opportunity on the doorstep of the Zurich netminder, but the shot was absorbed into the chest of Ludovic Waeber.

It was two minues of full control by the Swedes who drilled every puck at the net, but Zurich staved off the attacks before going back to even strength. An interference call on Frölunda Gothenburg defenceman Christian Folin gave Zurich their first powerplay, but Frölunda netminder Niklas Rubin was not letting anything seep through.

Less than two minutes into the second period, Frölunda equalised thanks to a wristshot snipe from Mats Rosseli-Olsen who was set up by Ryan Lasch. The Swedish side dominated on even strength play, and that pressure finally paid off for Czech top-forward Michael Špaček who buried the puck to give the Swedes their first lead of the night. 

A further two penalties by Zurich's Christian Marti and Patrick Geering gave Frölunda a chance to extend the lead but Ludovic Waeber made several great saves to keep Zurich in the game. A goal by Frölunda's Patrik Carlsson was waved off after a lengthy video review, and in a further blow to the Swedish side, Johan Stundström received a five minute penalty for kneeing giving the Swiss side a chance to come back.

The third period kicked off with the remaining powerplay for the Swiss visitors, but Frölunda came away unscathed. A holding penalty by defender Dario Trutmann was all the Swedes needed to extend their lead to 3-1. It was a high slot bullet from defender Matthias Norlinger, who one-timed the puck, courtesy of a pass from Michael Špaček.

With their foot on the pedal, Zurich edged closer after a goal from John Quenneville at 48:10, and then tied the Swedes with less than fives minutes to go in the third period. Zurich's captain Patrick Geering netted the crucial goal. 

The game headed to overtime after video review ruled out a goal off the skate of the Zurich netminder as the buzzer sounded to zero. Two minutes into OT Mats Rosseli-Olsen picked the top-left corner to seal the victory for the Swedes as the score finally settled to 4-3.
