- Derek Grant figured on three of Zurich's five tallies
- Klagenfurt's Simeon Schwinger scored their lone goal
- Both teams skated without their full lineup
Win number five came for ZSC Lions Zurich in Austria as they propelled their point total to 14 with a 5-1 decision over KAC Klagenfurt. The Austrians bow out of the competition while the Swiss await their opponents in the Round of 16 in November.
20-year-old Vinzenz Rohrer opened the scoring for the Swiss with a play down low. Derek Grant played the puck towards the net on the rush where Rohrer tucked it past Sebastian Dahm to make it 1-0.
Zurich continued their onslaught in the second, scoring three more goals, with two coming a little over a minute apart as Grant continued to pile on the points.
The former NHLer converted on the Swiss' third powerplay opportunity, cleaning up a rebound made by Jesper Frödén's initial shot. Then on the same man-advantage, it was Sven Andrighetto with a wicked one-timer from the far circle as Grant won the faceoff back to Mikko Lehtonen who found Andrighetto all alone.
A few minutes later, Alessandro Segafredo gave Zurich even more insurance when he pounced on a loose puck in the crease and sent it behind Dahm to extend his club's lead to 4-0. Segafredo was camped out at the top of the crease as a shot from Juho Lammikko bounced off the netminder's pads and onto the forward's stick as he slid it into the net.
The Austrians would finally find an answer in the third when Simeon Schwinger netted Klagenfurt's first goal on the powerplay. Following two blocked shots, the puck slid onto Schwinger's stick as he swatted it over Robin Zumbühl to get his team on the board.
Zurich's Lammikko, however, would put the game out of reach once again making it 5-1 with a marker from the left circle at 55:58.
Klagenfurt pushed for a response in the final minutes, but none came leaving them with their fourth loss of the campaign while the visitors exited with their fifth win of the season.
