- Damien Fleury with lone goal for Grenoble
With action getting underway in Group E, Finnish side Kärpät Oulu secured victory in their opening game against Grenoble of France, skating away with an 3-1 victory at the Oulun Energia Arena to get their Champions Hockey League campaign off to a great start with all three points.
Things got off to a great start for Kärpät, newly signed Jesse Puljujärvi grabbed a goal just under three minutes into his return for his childhood club which he rejoins after three-seasons in North America, while Janne Pesonen added a second for the hosts late in the opening frame to give Kärpät a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.
With no goals coming in the second period, Kärpät maintained their 2-0 lead into the final 20 minutes, looking to hold onto the lead to secure the three points. Damien Fleury was able to break the shutout bid with 11 minutes left to play with a nice wrist shot, but late in the game, Jakub Krejčík sealed the game for Kärpät, with a shot from the blueline with less than five minutes to spare, securing the three points in a 3-1 final score.
