- Robin Kovacs double gives Luleå slender advantage
- Hosts only able to force through one goal
- Joel Lassinantti makes 25 saves in visitors' win
Luleå Hockey will start next week's Quarter-Final Return Leg with a one-goal advantage thanks to a hard-fought win over Lausanne HC in Switzerland.
The opening period was tight and ended scoreless with Luleå outshooting their hosts by just one 8-7. Things sprang into life however in the second half of the middle period to send the teams into the locker rooms after 40 minutes level but with a goal each. Robin Kovacs broke the deadlock at 31:53 with the visitors on the powerplay; rocketing the puck home past Luca Boltshauser's glove.
Lausanne were, however, level with 25 seconds left in the period on a man advantage of their own - Lassinantti could only deflect Joel Genazzi's shot into the path of Josh Joorish to tap home on the follow-up.
In the final period, Luleå remained the more dangerous side and were rewarded with the go-ahead after just 67 seconds when Kovacs tipped Jesper Sellgren's shot from the point giving Boltshauser no chance. The teams shared only 11 shots in the final period, and after a Joorish penalty with 1:33 to go Luleå managed out the remainder of the game to leave with a narrow lead.
