- Lausanne defencemen net 2 goals in the first period
- Storhamar outshot Lausanne 33-31
- Andreas Dahl nets game-winner in OT
Despite a sluggish start, visitors Storhamar Hamar toppled Lausanne HC 3-2 in OT. The Norwegians overcame a 2-0 deficit after the first period, clawed their way back and were able to tie the game with less than three minutes remaining in the third period.
A one-timer from defenceman Andrea Glauser had the Swiss hosts take the lead 1-0 less than eight minutes into the opening period. The Norwegians weren't without good opportunities, but netminder Kevin Pasche was flawless between the pipes.
Lukas Frick made it 2-0 for Lausanne going coast to coast, before rifling the puck as he stepped in across the blue line. Aantti Suomela almost lit the lamp a third time, but the outstretched body of Henrik Fayen-Vestavik had the puck sent high.
A close-range shot from Damien Riat followed but was denied, and the period would close with the Norwegians narrowly outshooting their hosts 13-9, but trailing by two goals heading into the second period.
Continued pressure from Lausanne tested Fayen-Vestavik who managed highlight-reel-worthy saves.
The Norwegians would answer mid-way through the period. A forecheck by American forward Cole Schneider was the catalyst, followed by a shot attempt which was saved. Schneider picked up the rebound and slid the puck over to Kenneth Pappalardo Gulbrandsen who was wide open on the doorstep of Pasche. His goal would cut the lead to 2-1 and light a fire under both teams.
Minutes later Lausanne would secure their first powerplay of the night, on account of Stefan Espeland who was sent to the box for cross-checking, but they had no luck converting. The period would close with the Swiss ahead, and the game very much up for grabs.
With 42 minutes of play down, Lausanne had a second powerplay chance, but couldn't find the back of the net. A close-range shot from David Sklenička's could have extended the lead, but was swallowed up in the yellow jersey of Fayen-Vestavik.
The Swiss hosts had the lion's share of the puck, while Storhamar struggled to contain their rivals at times. As the clock ticked down to the four-minute mark, tensions were rising.
24-year-old Håvard Østrem Salsten answered the call for his side, collecting the equaliser for the Norwegians off a pass from Joe Gatenby, taking the game into OT.
The ensuing 3-on-3 saw Lausanne's Jason Fuchs send in a bullet which carreered just wide of the post, and moments later Fayen-Vestavik robbed Top Scorer Ken Jäger from what looked to be the game-winning goal.
A poorly timed slashing penalty from Michael Raffl gave Storhamar their first powerplay of the night, and with less than a minute remaining Andreas Dahl would be the man of the moment sinking the game-winning wrist shot for his side. The loss ends Lausanne's three-game winning streak.
