- Blindenbacher & Sutter score for Zurich
- Frieberg & Lindström score for Frölunda
- Ex-Indian Pettersson scores shootout winner, Lions take group lead
Whenever ZSC Lions Zurich and the Frölunda Indians face each other, the game could go either way, and this one was no different. There was not much to choose between the teams through 65 minutes of hockey, each scoring twice with Zurich holding a 36-34 edge in shots. The ensuing penalty shootout went seven rounds before Fredrik Pettersson, the former Indian, scored the winning goal.
The Lions struck first late in the first period on a rush when Dennis Hollenstein fed Severin Blindenbacher, who went high glove side on Johan Mattsson. The teams traded goals in the middle stanza – Max Frieberg swept home a rebound on the powerplay to tie it for Frölunda, but Zurich regained the lead late in the period when Dave Sutter’s long shot went in off the skate of a Frölunda back-checker. Gustav Lindström’s one-timer on a 5-on-3 powerplay tied it early in the third period and that was it. Zurich thought they’d scored a powerplay goal at the end of overtime but time had expired, setting the stage for the shootout.
After Pettersson's seventh-round goal, Frölunda's big sniper, Ryan Lasch had a chance to tie it again but Lukas Flüeler stopped him, ending the game.
