- Zurich through to the SFs
- Berlin give up another multi-goal lead
- Sven Andrighetto: 1G, 1A 20:30 TOI
A three-goal lead once again evaporated for Eisbären Berlin as they fell to ZSC Lions Zurich 9-7 on aggregate in their Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals match-up. Sven Andrighetto scored the crucial goal as this battle between the Germans and the Swiss came down to the final period where Zurich netted three to best Berlin and advance to the Semi-Finals.
As they did in the First Game, Berlin drew first blood and evened up the aggregate score at 4-4 when Kai Wissmann found the back of the net on the powerplay at 2:56. Ty Ronning faked a shot from the near circle before sliding a behind-the-back feed to Wissmann who let it go from the top of the slot past Šimon Hrubec.
The Germans then took the lead when they manufactured their second of the night courtesy of Manuel Wiederer. The forward secured his first when he tipped home a shot-pass that found its way past the Zurich netminder to make it 5-4.
Frederik Tiffels gave the Germans their second consecutive three-goal start when he deked around a defender in close before wristing it far side with three seconds left in the opening frame as Hrubec continued to struggle, allowing three goals on five shots through the first 20 minutes.
In the second, however, things began to slip for the Germans once again as Zurich started to find their rhythm.
First, Jesper Frödén scored on a set play in the slot. Yannick Weber skated down the near side before threading it through a pair of Berlin defenders to Frödén who wired it home to close the gap to one goal.
Justin Sigrist then tied it 6-6 on aggregate when he wired one past Jake Hildebrand with under two minutes to go in the period. Andrighetto managed to pick up the puck below the right dot as he found Sigrist all alone in the slot where the forward wasted no time in giving his club their second of the night.
The puck dropped in the third with the clubs exchanging goals seconds apart to open the final frame.
The Germans immediately reclaimed the advantage when Blaine Byron tipped it back door and in to give his club their fourth goal at 42:11 and make it 7-6 on aggregate.
But the Swiss responded in kind 22 seconds later when Juho Lammikko found space and wristed the puck past the Berlin netminder to register his fifth of the tournament.
Andrighetto then gave his team the lead when he produced a highlight-reel tally near the midway point of the period as he dangled between two defenders before patiently deking around a sprawling Hildebrand and lifting it into the net from a sharp angle.
Zurich secured their third unanswered marker off the stick of Derek Grant who finished off a pretty passing play as he deposited the puck into a yawning cage.
With four and a half still to play, Berlin pulled their netminder in an attempt to put a dent in the Swiss' lead. But the home side would stave off the Germans' chances to tie the contest as they cemented their place in the Semi-Finals with confidence.
